Once the monsoon retreat of the Mughal emperors, Mandu is at its charming best during the rains. Located at an altitude of 2,000 ft in the Vindhya ranges of Madhya Pradesh, the fortified capital of the Parmar rulers of Malwa is a historic theme park embellished with grand ruins, giant African boarback trees and endearing legends.
Day 1: Arrive in Indore drive to Mandu
Morning arrive in Indore then drive to Mandu and check-in to the hotel. Mandu's main attractions are located in three clusters and since the city is contained with a compact fort most of it can be explored by foot or by hiring a cycle or a local auto-rickshaw. This afternoon explore the cluster around Jahaz Mahal, a palace that seems to float like a ship (hence its name) when the waters of the two lakes around it swell during the rains. Hindola Mahal with its arched vaults that resemble a swing (as its name suggests) is another gem in this cluster. Note: all visits are on your own. Overnight at the hotel in Mandu.
Day 2: Mandu - Omkareshwar & Mamleshwar
After breakfast proceed for Omkareshwar & Mamleshwar (1.5 hrs) drive. Mamaleshwar is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. It is located on the bank of Narmada river. Although Omkareshwar is famous temple, Mamaleshwar is the actual Jyotirling. Back to Mandu. Overnight at the hotel in Mandu.
Day 3: Onward Journey
Today you say fond farewell to enchanted Mandu as you set off the Indore airport / railway station to catch your flight / train home or to your next destination.
